Between the two of them, Michael and Ronnie have survived two heart attacks, a near fatal infection, P.T.S.D., and a stroke.
After all that, the two friends who met at the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte are ready to settle into “everyday life,” as Ronnie puts it, after working together for over a year to meet goals and achieve housing.
“Once we realized we could help each other, I knew that we could be a success story,” says Ronnie of their teaming up to create a fresh start for themselves. “But every time we got close, one of us would get sick.”
Finally, things came together through the community’s Housing First initiative and your support of Crisis Assistance Ministry.
- First, Men’s Shelter personnel coached the future roommates in setting goals, budgeting, and locating an apartment they could afford.
- Then, Crisis Assistance Ministry stepped in with utility deposits and the opportunity to shop free- of-charge for essential furniture.
- Finally, our staff recruited volunteers to load, transport, and unload that furniture at their new home.
Thanks to you, Ronnie and Michael are now in their own apartment where they say they are looking forward to waking up at their own pace and making a pot of soup for dinner. Thank you again.
