Teen Volunteers Find Purpose + Fun

It's a recurrent question: where can my high school student volunteer and meet school community service requirements? How can my teen get involved? Where can I volunteer with my whole family? At Crisis Assistance Ministry, teens are encouraged to bring their energy and enthusiasm to help stabilize their neighbors. Teens aged 16+ can volunteer in select roles independently, and children aged 10 to 16 can serve with a supervising adult.

It’s a recurrent question: where can my high school student volunteer and meet school community service requirements? How can my teen get involved? Where can I volunteer with my whole family?

Teens Help Stabilize Housing With Time, Enthusiasm

At Crisis Assistance Ministry, teens are encouraged to bring their energy and enthusiasm to help stabilize their neighbors. Teens aged 16+ can volunteer in select roles independently, and children aged 10 to 16 can serve with a supervising adult.

Here are a few of the opportunities teen volunteers may sign up for:

  • Individuals, families, and groups can assist with receiving, inspecting, and preparing donated items for Free Store shoppers with year-round opportunities nearly every Tuesday – Saturday.
  • Groups may also purchase and prepare breakfast, lunch, or snack bags for families awaiting assistance. Youth groups often find it fun to plan out their snack bags, get together to assemble them, and then drop off the completed packs for Crisis Assistance Ministry staff to distribute. Small groups with adult supervision are also welcome to deliver and serve prepared breakfast, lunch, or snacks in the lobby at our offices.
  • Another great way for young people to volunteer is by planning and conducting a collection drive for most needed items like school uniforms, coats, linens, kitchen items, or new underwear. Conducting a drive can be a great individual or group project that builds organizational skills while earning service hours and meeting critical needs in the community.

Teens Enjoy Opportunity to Serve Together

Crisis Assistance Ministry staff love to help teens have fun while making a difference. In the Free Store production area, young people working together often effortlessly blend a great “hang” with hanging clothes for their neighbors. Dance contests and fashion shows have been known to break out on particularly joyous days, and it’s easy to see your impact as the racks fill up. What’s more, there’s the satisfaction of knowing everything you touch will soon be in the hands of someone who needs it, free of charge.

Teens enjoy spending time together and making a difference, all while earning needed service hours for school and college applications.

THEN: Landlords didn't have to provide a heat source in Mecklenburg County.
NOW: On a day like today (the second coldest of the fall), heat is recognized as a basic need.

The change happened because tenacious leaders like former CEO Caroline Love Myers worked to change policies and require landlords to provide a heat source in rental units.
This clip shows the foundation of Crisis Assistance Ministry: leaders who advocate for fundamental change that ensures basic needs are met.

The affordability crisis is forcing families to the breaking point. 64% of our customers' income goes toward housing. By comparison, housing is typically considered affordable when it consumes no more than 30% of a household's income. When two-thirds of the budget is spent before utilities and food, families are constantly on the verge of financial collapse. Your support provides the crucial emergency funds that keep these highly rent-burdened families from losing their homes. Be the Magic.

For this week's Flashback Friday, we want to send a shoutout to @stgabejaguars Student Council for being the main character this Halloween! 👑

They dropped a donation of 200 Halloween costumes for Mecklenburg County families, helping other children have a memorable night. That's a huge flex for the community!

These students don't just talk the talk; they're vibing on another level of service. And honestly, this is the most monumental treat we could ask for!

We see you, St. Gabriel's! You understood the assignment.

Which would you choose, food or shelter?

Back in 1975, food insecurity strained household budgets. Today, families in Mecklenburg County face similar—and often compounded—challenges. The current government shutdown deepens the crisis, making the link between food and housing instability even clearer. When budgets are stretched to secure shelter, food is the first sacrifice.

Like our first executive director, Caroline Love Myers, did in the beginning, we are working hard to ensure our customers have access to food by referring to all the incredible food pantries in Mecklenburg County including @shmetrolina and @nourishupclt.

Having to make a choice to pay for food or rent or electricity shouldn't be the reality for anyone. Thank you to all the food banks who know, like we do, a stable home needs stable meals.
