A Sprinkle of Holiday Cheer: A Bake Sale with a Heart

It all began a few years ago when Elle Tatlow was just 8 years old. Elle and mom were sitting at a stoplight here in Charlotte and Elle saw people out in the cold during the winter months.

November 15, 2024

It all began a few years ago on a cold winter day when Elle Tatlow was just 8 years old. Elle and mom were sitting at a stoplight in Charlotte when Elle noticed people outside in the cold without coats. Moved by their hardship, she talked with her mom about how she could help keep her community warm and get involved.

Elle decided she could make a difference—one cookie at a time.

While reading an American Girl Doll Magazine, Elle got the idea to hold a bake sale to raise funds and collect warm clothing for people like the ones she saw that day. With a simple box of cookie mix and some lemonade, she set up shop at the end of her driveway. Soon, her efforts grew into a full-blown bake sale.

What started as a small, heartwarming gesture has become an annual tradition. Year after year, Elle’s bake sale has grown, attracting more and more supporters. The once-small lemonade stand has transformed into a full-fledged community event featuring a variety of homemade treats and handcrafted items.

Today, Elle is 16 years old. Every fall for the last eight years, she pulls out her apron and baking tools just as the weather begins to turn. This year’s event featured three kinds of cookies and two kinds of cupcakes.

Through her dedication, Elle has not only raised funds but has directly impacted many of our neighbors in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, providing them with much-needed warmth and support.

As we approach the colder months, you can join us in honoring Elle’s extraordinary commitment. Your support makes it possible to provide essential resources to those who need them most.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate: Your financial contributions help support families experiencing housing instability during the Holiday season.
  • Volunteer: Lend a hand by volunteering your time to help our neighbors in need.
  • Donate Goods: Drop off gently used or new winter clothing, blankets, and other warm items for Free Store shoppers, or check out our Amazon Wishlist to order items shipped directly to Crisis Assistance Ministry.
  • Spread the Word: Share Elle’s story and inspire others to join the cause.

The holiday season has arrived, let’s remember the spirit of giving and compassion exemplified by young Elle Tatlow. Her simple act of kindness has grown into a powerful force for good in the Charlotte community. By joining Elle’s mission, you can help ensure that no one faces the winter cold alone.

Donate today to support Crisis Assistance Ministry and help us continue to provide essential resources to those in need. Your generosity can make a real difference in the lives of countless individuals.

From a cramped two‑room apartment to her first home at fifty‑one, Jennifer’s path has been anything but easy. Short‑term rent and utility help kept her family housed long enough to rebuild, save, and keep going.

Her journey shows what’s possible when a community steps in at the right time.

In this chapter of our history, Crisis Assistance Ministry became an independent 501(c)(3), evolving from “not just a faith based organization, but a community based organization,” as Caroline Myers described it. Being named the lead agency for financial assistance across Mecklenburg County solidified our role as a trusted place where neighbors turn when a financial shock threatens their stability.

What does care look like in real life?

For our neighbors, it looks like a bag filled with tissues, lip balm, a handwritten note, hand sanitizer wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wipes, and lotion. The Red Ventures IT team packed almost 200 of these care kits so families in crisis can feel just a little more human on some really hard days.

Huge thanks to @RedVentures for putting compassion into action. Want to rally your own crew for a care kit build? Our Volunteer team would love to help you get started. Link in bio or https://ow.ly/V11950Z2H6E

Choose your person.

In this “fight” video, four of our teammates from four different departments show off their best moves. But there is no real winner, because we are all on the same side: fighting to keep families stably housed, utilities connected, and hope alive.

Step into the arena with us. Take the Challenge and double your impact for neighbors working hard to get back on their feet.

In November 1982, Mecklenburg County commissioners recommended that Crisis Assistance Ministry administer the county’s General Assistance funds. Becoming the lead agency for emergency financial assistance cemented our role as the place where neighbors turn when a financial crisis threatens their stability.

Summer fun is loading … and so is the laundry. 😅

This week’s most needed Amazon Wishlist items are summer beach towels and laundry detergent – because sandy, sunscreen‑covered, popsicle‑dripped clothes do not wash themselves. Families should be worrying about memories, not messes.

Shop our Amazon Wishlist and send towels and detergent straight to Crisis Assistance Ministry so neighbors can enjoy the sun and still show up in clean, fresh clothes.

Eddie had a full-time job, a wife, and four kids, and was still one step away from eviction.

After joining our Financial Empowerment program, he spent months being honest about his spending habits and learning to be intentional with every paycheck. Now he has a savings plan and a lot more peace of mind.

During the 2026 Challenge, every gift is matched up to 1 million dollars, so your support can put Financial Empowerment and other critical programs within reach for twice as many families.

Double your impact for parents like Eddie who are ready to change their financial story: Link in bio
