Unleash the Power of Generosity

This year, we are thrilled to be part of another Giving Tuesday, powered by SHARE Charlotte. Giving Tuesday is a vital initiative to support our community's most vulnerable members. Although we are seeking financial donations to provide essential resources like clothing, housing stability, and assistance, we're more prominently calling on volunteers to join us.

November 21, 2024

Crisis Assistance Ministry is thrilled to join fellow Charlotte nonprofits to champion Giving Tuesday 2024, powered by SHARE Charlotte. Giving Tuesday is a vital initiative to support our community’s most vulnerable members. Although financial donations are always needed to further housing stability for low-wage-earning families, this year’s Giving Tuesday focus is a call for volunteers to help extend our mission to more neighbors. By recruiting 50 new volunteers for December and January, we can ensure that donated items are efficiently sorted, organized, and made available to those in need with dignity. Support, whether through a monetary donation or by volunteering time, will make a significant difference in the lives of hardworking families during this holiday season.

Volunteers play a pivotal role in ensuring community members have access to essential clothing and household goods—free of charge. With the help of the caring community members, Crisis Assistance Ministry distributes over 1 million free items annually through the Free Store and Partner Agency Network. During the busy holiday season, their support is even more critical as community members drop off high volumes of new and gently used items for families who shop here free of charge.

Winter coat drives often collect over 30,000 coats, hats, and gloves. Volunteers help receive, inspect, and prepare these donations for distribution to Mecklenburg County residents. Last year alone, the value of distributed goods exceeded $6.3 million. That effort would not be possible without the generous gift of time from thousands of individuals, families, civic groups, and corporate volunteers.

What is Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to unleash the power of radical generosity. In Mecklenburg County, hundreds of nonprofits, businesses, and individuals unite to create a ripple effect of positive change. Donors often express generosity in various ways, including monetary donations, physical items, and volunteering. In fact, 74% of donors engage in all three forms of giving. This year, Crisis Assistance ministry is particularly focused on mobilizing volunteers to make a tangible impact. By offering multiple ways for people to contribute, we can collectively create a stronger, more compassionate community.

Amplifying Your Impact

Volunteer support is essential to maximizing the impact of donations. By sorting, organizing, and distributing donated items, volunteers ensure that more contributions reach customers when they need it most. Volunteers make it possible for Crisis Assistance Ministry to allocate more resources toward delivering critical stability services, ultimately strengthening our community’s resilience.

With 50 extra volunteers in December and January, Crisis Assistance Ministry can do even more to help our neighbors! These volunteers will be inspecting, preparing, and distributing essential items like warm clothes, cozy blankets, and fresh toiletries. By pitching in, they’ll help make sure everyone has what they need to stay warm and comfortable during the winter months.

Help us Transform Lives

Your help, whether it’s a few hours of your time or a generous financial contribution, means the world to our neighbors in need. This Giving Tuesday, we’re on a mission to recruit 50 awesome volunteers to join our team in December and January. It’s a small step, but a giant leap for someone in need.

Just listen to Cedric, one of our customers: “I never thought I’d be in a position to need help, but I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me.”

Tanisha had a job, a budget, and an eviction notice in her hand.

She was this close to sleeping in her car when she came to Crisis Assistance Ministry. Because of donor support, we helped cover rent and walked with her through one‑on‑one coaching so she could get back on track for good.

We are just past halfway through our Match Challenge, which means every gift is doubled for neighbors like Tanisha.

From a cramped two‑room apartment to her first home at fifty‑one, Jennifer’s path has been anything but easy. Short‑term rent and utility help kept her family housed long enough to rebuild, save, and keep going.

Her journey shows what’s possible when a community steps in at the right time.

In this chapter of our history, Crisis Assistance Ministry became an independent 501(c)(3), evolving from “not just a faith based organization, but a community based organization,” as Caroline Myers described it. Being named the lead agency for financial assistance across Mecklenburg County solidified our role as a trusted place where neighbors turn when a financial shock threatens their stability.

What does care look like in real life?

For our neighbors, it looks like a bag filled with tissues, lip balm, a handwritten note, hand sanitizer wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wipes, and lotion. The Red Ventures IT team packed almost 200 of these care kits so families in crisis can feel just a little more human on some really hard days.

Huge thanks to @RedVentures for putting compassion into action. Want to rally your own crew for a care kit build? Our Volunteer team would love to help you get started. Link in bio or https://ow.ly/V11950Z2H6E

Choose your person.

In this “fight” video, four of our teammates from four different departments show off their best moves. But there is no real winner, because we are all on the same side: fighting to keep families stably housed, utilities connected, and hope alive.

Step into the arena with us. Take the Challenge and double your impact for neighbors working hard to get back on their feet.

In November 1982, Mecklenburg County commissioners recommended that Crisis Assistance Ministry administer the county’s General Assistance funds. Becoming the lead agency for emergency financial assistance cemented our role as the place where neighbors turn when a financial crisis threatens their stability.

Summer fun is loading … and so is the laundry. 😅

This week’s most needed Amazon Wishlist items are summer beach towels and laundry detergent – because sandy, sunscreen‑covered, popsicle‑dripped clothes do not wash themselves. Families should be worrying about memories, not messes.

Shop our Amazon Wishlist and send towels and detergent straight to Crisis Assistance Ministry so neighbors can enjoy the sun and still show up in clean, fresh clothes.
