In 1975, local faith leaders came together to create a “one-stop shop” to meet the urgent need for housing stability they saw emerging in our community. From this grassroots movement, Crisis Assistance Ministry was born.
Today, the mission of this independent nonprofit organization remains the same: “to provide assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis, helping them move toward self-sufficiency.”

Households served here often earn little more than $24,000 a year—only 1/3 of the area’s median income—and, on average, spend nearly 2/3 of that on housing and utilities. No wonder a small bump in the road can easily put a family’s housing in jeopardy as they struggle with the cost of rent, utilities, transportation, food, and other essentials.
An average of 125 families per day turn to Crisis Assistance Ministry hoping for a miracle to bridge a financial gap. With your support, they find short-term assistance to avoid eviction or loss of utilities; clothing and household essentials to sustain their family, and empowerment to build a brighter future for themselves and our entire community. Thank you.
All of this is only possible because of the support of people like you. Last year, more than 18 thousand Mecklenburg County households (18,198 to be exact) received assistance to remain safely housed and chart a path beyond their crisis toward longer-term financial stability.
You lift up our neighbors as you volunteer your time, contribute financially, and raise your voice on behalf of the families served here. You make it possible for moms, dads, sisters, brothers, and every kind of neighbor to avoid the downward spiral toward eviction and stabilize their homes while developing the tools to create a more secure future.
On behalf of each and every one of our 44,318 neighbors who found help, hope, and understanding here last year, thank you for the opportunity to serve our community with dignity and integrity.
