There’s something powerful about the first day of school: the anticipation, the nerves, the clean slate. But for too many students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, that moment of possibility is clouded by something as simple as what they’re wearing.
More than 40 public schools in the Charlotte area require uniforms: solid color polos, khakis, sweaters, socks. A small list of basic items—yet for families facing financial hardship, especially those already grappling with housing insecurity or job loss, those few pieces of clothing can feel out of reach.

That’s where you come in.
Crisis Assistance Ministry’s Free Store helps thousands of families each year shop for essentials without spending a dime. Among the most requested items, especially during back-to-school season, are school uniforms. Kids grow. Clothes wear out. And every year, caregivers find themselves trying to stretch already-tight budgets to meet school dress code requirements.
But when a student walks into a classroom wearing clothes that fit well and meet school guidelines, it does more than check a box. It boosts their confidence. It helps them feel like they belong. It removes the fear of being singled out or feeling “less than” their classmates.
Take Maya, for example, a single mother of two boys who recently visited the Free Store. “My sons are in second and fifth grade, and their school requires uniforms every day,” she said. “I had no idea how I was going to get them both everything they needed until a friend told me about Crisis Assistance Ministry. When I found exactly their sizes — and the colors they needed — it felt like a weight lifted. They walked into school that Monday, standing taller.”
Stories like Maya’s are not unique. They are the reason this work matters. They’re why, every July, we launch our annual School Uniform Drive with renewed energy and urgency.
What We Need
We accept both new and gently used school uniform items in sizes 3T to adult. That means:
- Solid color golf/polo shirts: white, navy, light blue, red, hunter green
- Solid color pants, skirts, jumpers: khaki, navy, black
- Solid color sweaters: navy, white, red
- Black or brown belts in student sizes
- Solid color socks: navy, khaki, black
We’ve created a School Uniform Shopping Guide to make it easy to see what items are most needed:
Every donation—whether it’s a gently worn sweater your child has outgrown or a bulk order of polos from our Amazon Wish List—goes directly to a child in need.
Why Now

Uniforms are a year-round need, but the summer months are especially critical. With the first day of school just around the corner, Free Store shelves must be stocked and ready.
How You Can Help
- Donate items directly to our drive-thru donation center at 500-A Spratt Street, Charlotte. Hours: Tues–Fri (9am–4pm), Sat (10am–3pm)
- Shop our Amazon Wish List to send uniforms straight to our doorstep
- Spread the word by sharing this blog, posting on social media, or organizing a mini drive with your neighborhood, faith group, or office.
When we talk about equity in education, it’s easy to focus on big systems and policies. But sometimes, equity starts with a pair of khaki pants and a clean polo. It starts with giving a child the confidence to raise their hand, to sit with pride, to belong.
You can be the reason a child walks into class with confidence this fall.
