Behind the Scenes: How Your Uniform Donations Reach Families

August 21, 2025

Every uniform tells a story.

That tiny pair of navy blue pants? Donated by a family whose youngest just started middle school. The stack of red polos? Shipped from a kind stranger through our Amazon Wish List. Each item has a journey—and at Crisis Assistance Ministry, it’s our job to make sure those journeys end with dignity.

When you donate school uniforms here, the story doesn’t end at the donation bin. In fact, that’s just the beginning.

Step 1: The Drop Off

Donations arrive at the Donation Drive-Thru, located at 500-A Spratt Street, Charlotte, NC 28206. Our team is there to greet you Tuesday through Friday (9 am–4 pm) and Saturday (10 am–3 pm). Whether you’re dropping off a single shirt or a carload of items, every donation is appreciated.

Amazon donations arrive daily, thanks to the generosity of supporters who shop directly from our Amazon Wish List. Shop the list here

Step 2: Sorting with Care

Once the donations arrive, they go to the back of our Free Store warehouse, where a dedicated team of staff and volunteers sort through every item by:

  • Size (3T to Adult)
  • Type (shirt, pants, skirt, belt, etc.)
  • Color (must align with school-approved colors)
  • Condition (only clean, gently used items are stocked)
Two volunteer women wearing blue company shirts sorting clothes in the production warehouse behing racks with hangers on them.

It’s meticulous work—because every child deserves quality. Volunteers often say that they imagine their own child or sibling when sorting, making sure each piece meets high standards for dignity and pride.

Step 3: Ready for Shoppers

Once sorted, many of these items are stocked in the Free Store, which operates like a retail store—but everything is free. There, Mecklenburg County families get to choose the items that best fit their needs, just like any other shopper. No digging through donation bins. No guesswork. Just shelves stocked with clean, organized uniforms. Others are picked up by one of approximately 100 partner agencies who will distribute them in the neighborhoods they serve—still free of charge.

Step 4: Worn with Pride

From our warehouse to the classroom, your donation becomes part of a child’s journey.

When 8-year-old Jordan picked out a new polo and fresh khakis, her mom told us, “This is the first time in months he hasn’t complained about what he’s wearing. She actually said, ‘I look like the other kids.’ That meant everything.”

Connecting Through Community

This entire process is powered by community. You can help children attending one of the many CMS schools who require uniforms start the school year “dressed to learn.”

Our Most Needed Items

  • Solid color polo shirts (white, navy, light blue, red, hunter green)
  • Pants, skirts, jumpers in khaki, navy, black
  • Sweaters in approved colors
  • Belts & socks in student sizes

Join the Movement

Every step in this process is made possible by people like you. Whether you give a single shirt or rally your coworkers to host a drive, you’re part of a bigger story.

Drop off. Ship in. Spread the word. Every step matters.

Congratulations to Sil Ganzó, from @ourbridgeforkids, for being named the 2025 Charlotte Woman of the Year!

At Crisis Assistance Ministry, we are honored to see her recognized alongside two leaders from our own history: founding CEO Caroline Love Myers and current CEO Carol Hardison who were both named Charlotte Woman of the Year.

All three women share a powerful common thread: they listen closely to neighbors who are often overlooked, create spaces where every family can belong, and turn urgent community needs into lasting change for Charlotte.

We are deeply honored to share this legacy and to celebrate Sil Ganzó as the 2025 Charlotte Woman of the Year.

Years after getting help to keep a roof over her kids’ heads, Jennifer now leads Wells Fargo volunteer teams in our Free Store. The same place that once helped her through a hard season is where she now shows up for other families.
