Compassion and Commitment Build Community

October 14, 2025

September was truly a remarkable month, overflowing with compassion, hard work, and the exceptional spirit of giving right here in our community! Crisis Assistance Ministry is dedicating this space to recognizing the corporate and community volunteer groups who committed their time and effort to making a real, tangible difference for our neighbors facing financial crisis. From assembling thousands of essential items to completely transforming our workspace for dignity and efficiency, their contributions were nothing short of commendable. We’ve got powerful stories of executives flying across the country just to serve and students showing genuine empathy, but what was the single most unexpected gift that one group left behind that will brighten the days of countless future volunteers? Keep reading to find out!

💙 Allstate Executives Fly In to Serve Local Neighbors

The team from Allstate numbered 35, but most impressive were the number of these executives who flew in from all over the country just to participate in this philanthropic event! In one dedicated session, they expertly put together 120 snack packs and 60 hygiene kits. These kits aren’t just collections of items; they are essential anchors of support that provide immediate comfort and help preserve dignity for individuals and families in their most difficult times. Knowing that so many leaders paused their busy schedules to come together and serve local people in need speaks volumes about their commitment to our shared community.

🛠️ Lowe’s Builds a Stronger Foundation, Inside and Out

The Lowe’s team truly brought their building expertise and boundless energy for not one, but two volunteer days this month. They jumped right into some massive projects that dramatically improved our operations and the experience for our customers. In the Baby Bundles Room, their skills were on full display as they dismantled old furniture and constructed new, movable shelving, creating a far more organized and welcoming space for expectant mothers to receive vital supplies. This transformation is akin to a new mother receiving a compass and map, showing her the clear path to essential resources when she is navigating the challenging terrain of early parenthood.

They also gave our hardworking staff and volunteers a much-needed lift by completely cleaning and organizing the Volunteer Break Room, even building a brand-new table for a more inviting place to rest. In addition, they built shelving and restored wheels and signage in the Warehouse, ensuring that tool handling is safer and quieter. As a beautiful finishing touch, they spent their second day painting all of our donation bins, guaranteeing that our vital tools not only work great but also look unified and dignified. Thank you, Lowe’s, for literally building us up!

🍽️ Siemens Energy Brings Nourishment and Care, Bagged with a Smile

The exceptional folks from Siemens Energy truly brought the “energy” when they gathered to assemble 200 hearty lunch bags for our neighbors. Their team poured their care into every detail, making fresh turkey, lettuce, and cheese sandwiches—even including a thoughtful mayo packet on the side—to provide a delicious and balanced meal for neighbors who visit our office for service.

Watching them work with such efficiency and bright, genuine smiles was a powerful reminder of how simple acts of kindness can make a profound positive change. Because of their efforts, several individuals and families will feel both nourished and cared for, like a desert traveler finding a fresh, unexpected oasis in their journey. It’s that generous spirit of service that makes the community impact of Siemens Energy so valuable.

🧴 Siemens Energy & Lowe’s Relay Elevates the Free Store

Another notable feat of teamwork involved a bit of a relay race with Siemens Energy and Lowe’s coming together to elevate the shopping experience in our Free Store. First, Lowe’s generously purchased and assembled a brand-new shelving unit, which helped create a more welcoming and dignified display. Then the Siemens Energy team took the baton, stocking this new unit with new hygiene and makeup products sourced through Second Harvest. This particular area of the store is so important because having access to personal care items is crucial for boosting confidence and self-esteem. This collaboration is a perfect example of how corporate partners work side-by-side, promoting both dignity and stability for our neighbors.

📝 Rotaract and Davidson College Cultivate the Next Generation of Givers

The next generation of volunteers also showed up in September with some innovative ideas. Chloe Asbury, VP of Community Outreach for the Rotaract Club at Central Piedmont Community College, asked if they could decorate their snack bags and add notes of encouragement. The answer, of course, is a resounding yes! We absolutely love it when our groups add that personal, empathetic touch for our neighbors. Meanwhile, our Director of Volunteer Engagement, Phillip Miller, visited the Davidson College Community Involvement Fair, where he met some passionate students and showed them all the ways they can sign up to serve. The dedication of these young adults is a beacon of hope, much like a lighthouse guiding a ship through rough seas back toward a safe harbor. Their dedication gives us so much hope for the future!

A Hand-in-Hand Commitment to Mecklenburg County

For more than 50 years, Crisis Assistance Ministry has been a cornerstone of support in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, providing stability services—emergency financial assistance, access to free household essentials, financial coaching, and dignity to neighbors facing hardship. While our staff works diligently to stabilize housing for one-on-one with neighbors seeking services, volunteers are a critical extension of our mission—they are the hands that stock the shelves, inspect donated items, and pack the hygiene kits that affirm a person’s worth. They multiply our capacity to serve, allowing our paid staff to focus on the deep, complex needs of customers in crisis. This constant, generous outpouring of volunteer time from groups like Allstate, Lowe’s, and Siemens Energy demonstrates why, even after five decades, Crisis Assistance Ministry remains a steadfast resource. It is not simply the agency that endures, but the compassionate partnership between our organization and the people of Mecklenburg County who choose to show up, give back, and stand hand-in-hand with their neighbors every single day.

Group volunteer opportunities are available Tuesday through Saturday via our volunteer portal. Corporate, faith, student, civic, and even family groups are welcome.

Help us welcome our newest Board members: Sherry Ferguson, Jay Herring, and Allison Hoffman. 💛

Our Board is a volunteer group of community leaders guiding housing stability and financial assistance work across Charlotte‑Mecklenburg. They bring expertise from finance, healthcare, housing, law, and grassroots organizing, all grounded in a shared commitment to neighbors in financial crisis.

New Board member Allison Hoffman put it this way:

“It is such an honor to join the amazing board at Crisis Assistance Ministry. I'm looking forward to learning more about the important work they are doing in our community, and raising awareness about the financial hardships our neighbors are facing.”

We are grateful for Sherry, Jay, and Allison’s time, talents, and heart for this mission.

Change happens when we show up and speak out.

Earlier this week, Carol Hardison @carolinthehouse stood before @cltgov City Council to support “The People’s Budget” – a vision for a city budget that centers care, dignity, and justice for all of Charlotte, not just a few.

Every day, we see neighbors pushed to the brink by rising housing costs, low wages, and impossible choices. In the last fiscal year, 52,625 evictions were filed in Mecklenburg County.

Carol uses her voice publicly and consistently so those realities are not ignored, calling for investments in housing stability and the services families rely on. Leadership means being willing to be seen, to listen, and to speak up for those who are too often left out of the conversation. We are grateful to have a leader who does exactly that for our entire community. 💛

According to a national study, renters who believe they’re likely to be evicted in the next two months have more than double the odds of experiencing depression and anxiety compared with renters who feel secure in their housing.

Even the threat of losing a home can keep families up at night. This Mental Health Awareness Month and Affordable Housing Month, we’re working so that more Mecklenburg County neighbors can worry less about eviction and focus more on healing.

This could have been a novel full of obstacles, but it’s a real story of hope, resilience, and strength.

In “A Tale of Two Customers,” Mandy and Shawn walk through the same lobby at Crisis Assistance Ministry carrying very different burdens and find the same open door to help and a way forward. Their journeys reflect what so many of our neighbors face when life unravels: past‑due notices, hard choices, and the fear of losing home and stability.

But there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

During our Challenge Match, every dollar you give is matched dollar for dollar, so your generosity goes twice as far—twice the help, twice the impact, twice the hope—for families like Mandy’s and Shawn’s. Tap the link in our bio to read “A Tale of Two Customers” and make your matched gift today.

This group surprised us in the best way 💛

The Child First team from Children’s Home Society of North Carolina showed up with a gentle approach and fierce tenacity, carefully inspecting donations that will soon support local families — and somehow made it all look fun and effortless at the same time. We’re so grateful for partners whose mission to strengthen children and families aligns so closely with ours, and we can’t wait to welcome them back again soon.

Then: median rent around $145.
Now: about $1,600.

Wages didn’t keep up. Housing costs did.
Neighbors we serve today earn about $25,000 a year and spend most of it just to stay housed.

Since 1975, 2.5 million people have found help here when the math just didn’t work anymore.

The year changed. The zip codes changed.
The need for a safety net in Charlotte didn’t.

Children’s mental health isn’t always shaped by school, friends, and family—sometimes it starts with a notice on the door, a packed suitcase, and another bedroom they’ll only sleep in for a few months.

Help keep children safely housed by supporting Crisis Assistance Ministry’s Challenge Match. Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $1M) and will support a neighbor who’s choosing between essentials and rent. Link in Bio
