Every day in Mecklenburg County, families face unexpected crises – a job loss, a medical emergency, or a sudden rent increase – that threaten to upend their stability. When that happens, no one should have to face those challenges alone. That belief drives Crisis Assistance Ministry’s Partner Agency Network, a collaboration of organizations working together to ensure help arrives quickly, compassionately, and without unnecessary barriers.
Through our Partner Agency Network, we work hand-in-hand with a diverse group of local nonprofits and service organizations to ensure neighbors in need can access help efficiently, compassionately, and without unnecessary barriers.
A Collaborative Approach
Our partner agencies – a network of local nonprofits and government service providers – are often the first point of contact when someone experiences financial hardship. They may be a health care provider screening for social drivers of health, a school social worker supporting a struggling student, or a neighborhood organization offering food assistance.
Instead of duplicating efforts, these agencies submit referrals directly to Crisis Assistance Ministry through an online portal for financial assistance with rent and utilities, Financial Empowerment coaching, or essential household items. This streamlined referral process saves time, reduces frustration, and ensures that resources are used where they are needed most.
Perhaps just as importantly, referrals submitted by partner agencies preserve our shared customers’ dignity. Because they are trusted members of the communities they serve, these organizations can more easily gather all the necessary information and documentation, saving their clients from having to share their personal circumstances with a stranger.
Last year alone, more than 100 different partner agencies referred the families they serve to Crisis Assistance Ministry through our online portal.
One of those partners, Freedom Fighting Missionaries, exemplifies this innovative approach. The organization exists “to assist formerly incarcerated and criminal justice involved persons with reentry by achieving self-sufficiency through sustainable services and resources.” People with a history of criminal justice involvement often encounter barriers far beyond those faced by others who struggle to meet their basic needs. Through our close partnership, Crisis Assistance Ministry and Freedom Fighting Missionaries work together to address issues like lack of employment, loss of critical documents such as social security cards, and impediments to obtaining safe and stable housing.
Just as Freedom Fighting Missionaries helps people overcome barriers after incarceration, our partnership with the Latin American Coalition helps families navigate an entirely different set of challenges. This partnership allows families to overcome barriers of language, transportation, childcare, and cultural understanding while seeking assistance with urgent needs.
Mariagrazia and her four children are just one family out of dozens who are served every year through the close partnership between Crisis Assistance Ministry and the Latin American Coalition. After an injury put her out of work and at risk of eviction, she turned to the Coalition where a Spanish-speaking caseworker was able to submit a referral to Crisis Assistance Ministry, resulting in a payment to her landlord and preservation of the family’s home. That safety and peace of mind allowed Mariagrazia to focus on healing and getting back to stability.
Sharing Resources and Expertise
Beyond direct referrals, the Partner Agency Network is a community of shared learning and mutual support. Partner organizations receive access to training, information, resource sharing, and networking opportunities hosted by Crisis Assistance Ministry. Together, members of the network strengthen their collective understanding of poverty, housing insecurity, available resources, and the systems that impact low-income families.
Additionally, our partner agencies have access to our Partner Agency Shopping Service (PASS) that allows them to shop free-of-charge for items that have been donated to Crisis Assistance Ministry by our generous community members and corporate supporters.
Our partners take essential items like school uniforms, winter coats, and hygiene items from our warehouse out into the community and put them directly into the hands of our neighbors who need them. Long-standing partnerships with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and Communities in Schools are examples of how this vital program ensures families can access essential items quickly, without added time or transportation challenges. Each item received free of charge represents financial savings for families that they can then apply to other pressing needs like childcare and food.
Real Help, Real Impact
When agencies work together, the results are powerful.
Last fiscal year alone, more than 800 households were assisted through emergency financial assistance referrals submitted by members of our Partner Agency Network, and over 750,000 items were distributed through PASS. This collective effort ensures that more individuals and families can stay safely housed, maintain essential services and material goods, and focus on rebuilding their lives.
