Customer service can be demanding, even in the nonprofit sector. But a handful of dedicated volunteers at Crisis Assistance Ministry find it to be a rewarding experience. Their passion for community justice and generosity fuels their work. They provide essential help, hope, and understanding to people facing financial hardship. Their compassion transforms inquiries with anxious customers at the “window” into a positive experience that allows them to connect directly with families seeking assistance.
At Crisis Assistance Ministry, volunteers are more than helping hands – they’re the heart of the organization. Years of dedicated service from volunteers extend our capacity to stabilize families experiencing a financial crisis in a cost-efficient and dignified manner. Take Sue Hines and Melissa Raphael, for example. These customer service volunteers have been with Crisis Assistance Ministry for at least a decade.
Why do they stay? It’s simple: their values deeply resonate with the mission to provide assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis, helping them move toward self-sufficiency. Helping stabilize housing for Charlotte-Mecklenburg families is a cause they believe in.

“My favorite part is interacting with customers who are in need because of a temporary situation that they find themselves in, such as hospitalizations, losing their jobs, for whatever reason.”
~ Sue Hines
This dedication fosters a unique experience. Over time, the volunteers develop a profound understanding of the challenges faced by the community. They become experts in navigating resources and providing targeted support. Witnessing the impact of their work firsthand – a family finding stability, a child receiving necessary clothing appropriate for the season – fuels a powerful sense of accomplishment.
“One-on-one interaction with our clients is important to me, which is why I volunteer here,” Melissa Raphael said.
But the rewards extend beyond individual cases. Crisis Assistance volunteers become part of a supportive community, sharing their experience and expertise while learning from others. It’s a chance for personal growth, to develop valuable skills and empathy.
Recalling a particularly powerful interaction recently, Sue Hines describes a customer whose grandson’s house had just burned down. “The customer started telling me about what happened,” Sue said. “She was very emotional but also incredibly grateful that Crisis Assistance Ministry was there to offer her some hope in a difficult time.”
Sue’s experience is just one example of the many families who turn to the community for help through Crisis Assistance Ministry. Every day, over 120 families walk through these doors seeking a lifeline. Imagine the hope ignited, the burdens lifted, and the futures brightened thanks to the compassion of these volunteers.

“Everyone is going to need a helping hand at some point.”

Customer service volunteers also understand life’s unexpected challenges. “Things happen to all of us, regardless of socioeconomic status,” Melissa said. “So everyone is going to need a helping hand at some point.”
“Most families in Charlotte, who have income, just can’t make it in this economy. Their salaries don’t enable them to pay their expenses, whether it’s rent or utilities,” says Sue. According to a recent study from SmartAsset Charlotte, North Carolina, has become a place where a comfortable life requires a six-figure salary.
Ultimately, these volunteers find deep compassion and fulfillment in consistently living out their values. They’re making a lasting contribution to individual families while strengthening our whole community. Together, caring community members provide a beacon of hope for our neighbors who are struggling to maintain housing stability.
