Lowe’s Donation Provides Essential Appliances to Neighbors in Need

Two Charlotteans are breathing a sigh of relief after receiving essential appliances, thanks to a generous donation from Lowe’s.

Lowe’s donation of $100,000 made it possible for Crisis Assistance Ministry’s team to purchase nearly 300 new appliances including washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, and microwaves.  Here are the stories of two individuals who recently picked up brand new washers and dryers – a life-changing and inspirational gift during a challenging time in their lives.

A “Blessing” for Hattie

“It felt like Christmas,” said Hattie, describing the day she brought her new washer and dryer home. Living alone on a fixed disability income and unable to come up with the money to replace her old washer and dryer when they broke down several years ago, Hattie struggled to get to the laundromat three times a week. “With COVID,” she said, “You just want to feel clean and safe. It came at a perfect time.”

Fifteen years ago, Hattie lost her husband and her only child within six weeks of each other. Today, she cares for her mother, who uses a wheelchair and oxygen, driving across town each day to ensure she is safe and has food to eat. Local partner agency DreamKey Partners completed Hattie’s screening and assessment before making the referral to Crisis Assistance Ministry, where she received brand new appliances thanks to the generosity of Lowe’s. Now, she can reclaim the time she spent in laundromats for a bit of self-care.
“It was a blessing that someone put me first,” Hattie said, “I am so thankful.”

The Gift of Time for Ursulla

With three children in the home, Ursulla has a lot of laundry to do each week. So, when the washing machine failed late last year, followed soon after by the dryer, it was a big problem. In the midst of a divorce and with only a part-time job, Ursulla couldn’t afford to replace the appliances. Hauling baskets of clothes up and down two flights of stairs to the laundry room in her apartment complex was exhausting and time-consuming.

Screened and referred by Charlotte Works/Equus Workforce Solutions, Ursulla now has a brand new washer and dryer from the Furniture & Appliance Store. With laundry access right in her own apartment, she has more time and energy to care for her children and keep them on track with school. “It’s such a wonderful convenience,” she said. “I really, really appreciate it.”

Crisis Assistance Ministry offers appliances to Mecklenburg County households facing financial hardship who are screened and referred by Partner Agencies across the community.  Items are donated by the community and are distributed free of charge via the Partner Agency Network.

From a cramped two‑room apartment to her first home at fifty‑one, Jennifer’s path has been anything but easy. Short‑term rent and utility help kept her family housed long enough to rebuild, save, and keep going.

Her journey shows what’s possible when a community steps in at the right time.

In this chapter of our history, Crisis Assistance Ministry became an independent 501(c)(3), evolving from “not just a faith based organization, but a community based organization,” as Caroline Myers described it. Being named the lead agency for financial assistance across Mecklenburg County solidified our role as a trusted place where neighbors turn when a financial shock threatens their stability.

What does care look like in real life?

For our neighbors, it looks like a bag filled with tissues, lip balm, a handwritten note, hand sanitizer wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wipes, and lotion. The Red Ventures IT team packed almost 200 of these care kits so families in crisis can feel just a little more human on some really hard days.

Huge thanks to @RedVentures for putting compassion into action. Want to rally your own crew for a care kit build? Our Volunteer team would love to help you get started. Link in bio or https://ow.ly/V11950Z2H6E

In November 1982, Mecklenburg County commissioners recommended that Crisis Assistance Ministry administer the county’s General Assistance funds. Becoming the lead agency for emergency financial assistance cemented our role as the place where neighbors turn when a financial crisis threatens their stability.

Summer fun is loading … and so is the laundry. 😅

This week’s most needed Amazon Wishlist items are summer beach towels and laundry detergent – because sandy, sunscreen‑covered, popsicle‑dripped clothes do not wash themselves. Families should be worrying about memories, not messes.

Shop our Amazon Wishlist and send towels and detergent straight to Crisis Assistance Ministry so neighbors can enjoy the sun and still show up in clean, fresh clothes.

Eddie had a full-time job, a wife, and four kids, and was still one step away from eviction.

After joining our Financial Empowerment program, he spent months being honest about his spending habits and learning to be intentional with every paycheck. Now he has a savings plan and a lot more peace of mind.

During the 2026 Challenge, every gift is matched up to 1 million dollars, so your support can put Financial Empowerment and other critical programs within reach for twice as many families.

Double your impact for parents like Eddie who are ready to change their financial story: Link in bio
