Beyond the Poverty Rate: A More Nuanced Look at Financial Security in Mecklenburg County

You’ve probably heard the saying that numbers don’t lie. But when it comes to understanding poverty, the numbers certainly can be deceiving. Mecklenburg County’s Scorecard, based on data from 2019, paints an optimistic picture overall. On most measures, our community appears to be thriving. But when those numbers are broken down by race, a very different picture emerges.

Big things happen when a community comes together for housing stability.

Crisis Assistance Ministry was grateful to connect with the Canopy Housing Foundation as we look ahead to the 10th annual Strides for Shelter 5K.

Pictured: A Crisis Assistance Ministry team member and customer advocates connecting with Canopy Housing Foundation partners ahead of this meaningful event.

Crisis Assistance Ministry is honored to be the 2026 beneficiary. Proceeds will help transform our Free Store and strengthen access to clothing, shoes, household goods and other essentials for Mecklenburg County neighbors.

Join us Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8:30 a.m. at McAlpine Creek Park. Every step matters!

Working hard doesn't always guarantee financial stability in today's economic climate. Hear Kimberly’s firsthand experience and learn what to know about evictions in North Carolina. Tap the link in our bio to listen to the full clip and read the blog.

NOBODY’S TALKING ABOUT THIS!

The government spent decades denying UFO sightings and now they’re calling them “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena” (UAPs).

Well, we finally have the declassified footage.

It turns out extraterrestrials didn’t come to take over Earth… they just came to Charlotte for coffee and ended up getting a crash course in housing stability at Crisis Assistance Ministry. ☕👽

Our sci-fi filmmaking skills may have earned zero stars, but helping Mecklenburg County families build financial stability is 5-star work.

This is the 3rd and final installment in our terrible movie series! Skip the premiere and support local families from home.

@nucorcorporation is North America’s largest steel producer and the continent’s largest scrap-metal recycler.

Volunteers from the Legal Department packed hearty lunch bags and helped serve 200 dignified meals to our neighbors: sandwiches, fruit, chips or crackers, and water.

They loved the experience and are already thinking about returning for holiday volunteer opportunities. Thank you, Nucor!

The copy machine never stood a chance. 🦖 Donate at the link in our bio. Come back next week for another movie premiere.

In our latest intentionally bad movie trailer, a dinosaur arrives ready to help but first it must survive the Customer Service area, the copy machine, and an awkward break-room lunch.

The reviews may be brutal, but the mission behind this film is serious.

Crisis Assistance Ministry’s Non Event campaign invites supporters to skip a traditional event and make a direct investment in Mecklenburg County families facing financial crisis. A gift can help families build financial stability, keep essential utilities on, and remain safely housed.

Thank you to the CFGI team for bringing their time, talent, and energy to Crisis Assistance Ministry. Their volunteer shift was a meaningful investment in Mecklenburg County neighbors facing financial crisis, and the return is a stronger, more supported community.

We are grateful to Board Member Jay Herring for helping make the connection and to Chief Advancement Officer Shelly Biby for welcoming the team. Safe to say: the day’s balance sheet was full of service, connection, and new friends. (Accounting pun 😉)

We hope to see you back soon, CFGI! 🙌
